A Child of Body and Blood's Delight

Remember you were born of night,
The fruit of knowledge rent by seduction,
A child of body and blood’s delight.

With tissues broken by a bite,
Your innocence let to prostitution,
Remember you were born of night.

The skin alone succumbs to blight—
The seed encasing through contrition
A child of body and blood’s delight.

Deceitful is the serpentine rite
Slashing soul from life in desperation.
Remember you were born of night.

Breath, water, and dust unite.
From earth arises in regeneration
A child of body and blood’s delight.

Drawn at last from death’s appetite,
You may embrace the spirit’s unction.
Remember you are reborn of light
A child of body and blood’s delight.

  1. I like the villanelle style; repeating the same two lines throughout can be hard (it can seem forced/repetitive), but I didn't feel that here.

If I may offer some critique, "deceitful is the serpentine rite" has some difficulty coming off the tongue the first time I said it. After I gave it a few more runs, it became easier, so it may not be a major problem, but my first approach was difficult.

    I really enjoyed it!
